Industrial machinery relies on components that can provide controlled, reliable motion to automate tasks. Two key components that serve this role are linear actuators and air motors. In this article, we’ll delve into how these devices work, their capabilities, and their applications across various types of industrial equipment.

How Do Linear Actuators Work?

Linear actuators convert energy into straight-line, push/pull motion. Most commonly, rotary motion from a motor or other source gets transformed into linear movement via a screw, rack and pinion, or ball screw mechanism. The key components of a linear actuator typically include:

  • Power source: This delivers rotational mechanical power, usually an electric motor or hydraulic/pneumatic rotary actuator. Some small actuators also rely on solenoids.
  • Conversion mechanism: As mentioned above, this converts the rotary motion into linear action. Common types include lead screws, rack and pinion gears, belt drives, and ball screws.
  • Housing: The body that encloses and supports the internal components.
  • Controller: Controls that regulate the extension and retraction of the actuator. Can range from basic open/close switches to programmable automation controllers.
  • Mounting: Brackets, trunnions, clevises and other mounts to affix the actuator to machinery and connect load elements.

Based on this design, actuators can generate high levels of tension and compression efficiently, in a compact form factor. The precision and flexibility of movement control allow them to automate linear positioning tasks reliably.

Air Motors – Putting Compressed Air to Work

Air motors utilize compressed air as the power source instead of electricity, hydraulics or other sources. The compressed air expands in chambers of the motor, forcing a rotor to turn. The rotational output then drives mechanical components through gears, pulleys, shafts and other transmission elements.

Types of air motors include vane, piston and gear varieties. Sizes range from fractional horsepower to larger industrial motors with over 100 horsepower. As the air pressure and volume supplied to them increases, the torque and speed capabilities scale up proportionally. Control valves precisely regulate the air feed to govern acceleration, speed and torque according to work needs.

Noteworthy capabilities that make pneumatic air motors valuable for industry uses:

  • Delivering a lot of power from a small package
  • Offering precise speed adjustment capabilities
  • Handling variable, irregular loads well
  • Producing high starting torque
  • Serviceable in wet, dirty, explosive and other hazardous environments where electric motors pose risks
  • Providing a cleaner, more energy efficient power option compared to hydraulics

These qualities lend air motors well to applications that require controlled power transmission under challenging conditions. Plus, with appropriate gearing they can achieve as much positional accuracy and repeatability as alternative motion technology options.

Applications of Linear Actuators

Linear actuators serve as integral components in numerous types of moving machinery. A few major application categories include:

Factory Automation Equipment

Industrial assembly lines, robotic arms, conveyor belts, pick-and-place devices and other automated equipment would lack controlled movement without linear actuators. Depending on the loads and working envelopes required, pneumatic rod-style cylinders or electric ball screws might power the lifting, shifting and motion tasks. Actuators allow the automation processes to be highly customizable as needed via position and velocity controllers.

Gate & Door Openers

Opening vehicle gates and large industrial doors like those found on barns and airplane hangars demands considerable amounts of linear push-pull force. Hydraulic linear actuators containing heavy-duty cylinders paired with powerful pump motors are well suited for these lengthy strokes and huge loads. Position switches or remote monitoring helps control door movement, while large clevis ends enable pivoting capability.

Medical & Hospital Beds

Hospital beds used for patient positioning and medical procedures rely on electric linear actuators to provide sit-up, lay-down and customized tilt adjustments. The actuators allow movements of the back and leg rests in small, calibrated increments to achieve the doctor or patient’s desired positioning for comfort, medical access or other health needs.

Pickup Truck Tailgates

Power lift tailgate actuators are growing in popularity on pickup trucks and SUVs. These heavy duty electric actuators simplify opening and closing of pivot-style split tailgates. Truck owners no longer have to wrestle with getting the cumbersome tailgates to raise into the open position or gently close. The actuators take over the effort with controlled automated movement.

Applications for Air Motors

In similar fashion to linear actuators, air motors serve essential movement functions across many machine types. Some leading application categories include:

Packaging & Conveying Equipment

From capping devices to labeling machines to conveyor drives, air motors feature extensively in industrial packaging and distribution machinery. They provide low-friction, low-maintenance actuation well suited for the repetitive functions involved in processing, counting, metering, filling and moving packaged goods and materials. Servo pneumatic positioning drives tout excellent precision and dynamics.

Machine Tools

Powering the rotary movement of drills, presses, lathes and other industrial metalworking and woodworking tools requires sustained high torque. Air vane and turbine motors meet these demands in a small footprint, while avoiding the sparks and explosion risks a conventional electric motor would pose in a machining environment. They achieve ample rotational force output to drill even stainless steel or cast iron. Control valves carefully regulate speed and torque.

Mixing & Agitator Equipment

From viscous material batches to volatile chemical reactions, industrial mixing applications require efficient rotational energy, often under hazardous conditions. Air motors offer an appealing alternative to hazardous hydraulic systems or spark-producing electric motors. Their high starting torque handles shock loading well. Vane air motors coupled with gear reducers make especially effective mixers.

Heavy Duty Vehicles

Pneumatic air motors allow mobile equipment like tractors, mining trucks, forklifts and cranes to achieve material handling and hauling muscle. They provide ample torque for robust operation of winches, lifts, reels, augers, conveyors and other heavy deck equipment. Filters keep debris from damaging the motor’s internal airflow system.
